Lukas Siebenkotten, president of the German Tenants&#8217; Association, was very pessimistic at the end of May 2023. &#8220;Everything that is legal will be exploited in terms of rent increases in the coming years.&#8221; Rents would rise &#8220;significantly faster than wages.&#8221; If the current trend continues, the number of households that have to spend 40% or more of their income on rent will increase &#8220;drastically&#8221; in the next few years and will soon exceed five million.   <\/p>\n\n<p>This no longer applies only to economic centers, popular cities or university towns. The situation is also becoming increasingly tense in other regions of the country. While Frankfurt am Main and the Rhine-Main region have long been known throughout Germany for their high rents, the crisis has now also reached the cities of northern and central Hesse.
