Berliners (nationals of voting age, registered in Berlin) were asked whether the housing portfolios of large housing companies, with more than 3,000 apartments in Berlin, should be transferred from private to common ownership. The referendum was initiated by Deutsche Wohnen &amp; Co enteignen (DWE), a social movement that derives its name from one of the large real estate companies in Germany (later acquired by Vonovia). Although the referendum was successful with 59.1 per cent of the votes in favour of the transfer of private ownership in housing to common ownership, the response of the Senate\u2019s coalition government was motivated by tactics of delaying the adoption of a socialization law. In our chapter, we trace the DWE campaign and discuss the idea of socialization under Article 15 of the German constitution\u00a0\u2013 an effort to democratize society through common ownership.<br><br>Feichtner, I., Heeg, S. &amp; Wihl, T.
