San Diego is situated in a large binational border region with a population of approximately 3.3 million people in a geographic area of 1.1 million hectares. It also has the dubious distinction of having the fourth largest number of people experiencing homelessness in the U.S. Dr. Rabinowitz Bussell will begin her presentation by discussing the historical causes of the rise of homelessness in San Diego with a focus on the systemic factors and urban planning conditions that have contributed to its growth. Since the population of people experiencing homelessness is diverse, Dr. Rabinowitz Bussell will share data on the demographic diversity of San Diego’s homeless population and the disparate ways in which people’s identities contribute to and impact their experiences with homelessness. This is of critical importance to research and policymaking and will set the stage for the final portion of the presentation. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the work of Homelessness Hub, a research lab at UC San Diego that conducts collaborative, community-engaged, data-driven research to inform local policy and action on homelessness in San Diego.

Mirle Rabinowitz-Bussell is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego. She is also the founding Faculty Director of the Homelessness Hub. Her research focuses on five core areas: affordable housing, homelessness, local community development, the intersection between planning and real estate and development, and the role of philanthropy in community economic development.

Veranstaltungsort: Marienstraße 13 (Hörsaal D), Weimar

digitale Teilnahme: BigBlueButton (Zugangscode: 635539) https://meeting.uni-weimar.de/b/kat-ek9-0up-qom

In this talk, Dr. Mirle Rabinowitz-Bussell will explore different dimensions of the U.S. homelessness crisis with a focus on San Diego County.
