PhD project: Care Functions of Housing in Transition. Using the example of large housing estates in small and medium-sized towns in Thuringia
Housing and nearby infrastructure are crucial for carrying out care activities such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, recreation, or education. These care functions of housing are currently in transition. On one hand, social care needs and thus requirements for housing are changing, e.g., due to new family constellations or the increase in (older) single-person households. At the same time, the transformation of housing supply, along with processes of social-spatial polarization, leads to unequal conditions for care. The dissertation examines this interrelationship based on large housing estates in small and medium-sized towns in Thuringia. Large housing estates represent a significant housing resource in Eastern German small and medium-sized towns but have hardly been analyzed for their care functions and have received little attention in the discourses surrounding the Caring City. Through the nexus of housing and care research, the dissertation empirically investigates the transformation process of the care functions of housing. This involves analyzing the local care needs of different population groups, the social-spatial conditions for care, and the management tools of local actors, such as municipalities, housing companies, or social organizations.
The Concept of Caring City – Potentials for Sustainable and Social Urban Development (12/2023-09/2024)
The aim of the research project was to explore the potentials of the Caring City concept for urban research and for a social and sustainable urban development practice. This involved reviewing the scientific discourse on the Caring City, examining international application examples, and preparing the building blocks of a Caring City for practice. The research project was conducted at Bauhaus University Weimar under the direction of Acting Prof. Sandra Huning and was funded by vhw – Federal Association for Housing and Urban Development.
