Short CV

Johanna Betz is currently working as a PostDoc-researcher at the Institute of Human Geography at the Goethe-University Frankfurt.

In April 2025, she finished her PhD on „Infrastructural conflicts on housing affordabilty. Local Housing Regimes in Tübingen, Frankfurt am Main und Dresden“. Prior, she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Tübingen. She studied Geography at the Freie Universität Berlin, the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá.

Research focus

Johanna Betz conducts research on housing and public infrastructure from a political-economic and semiotic-discursive perspective and deals with the transformation of statehood. In her dissertation, she examined housing policy power relations as well as blockade and innovation dynamics at the municipal level in the interaction between the housing industry, politics, administration, and civil society. She also examined the (lack of) influence of tenants with different experiences of marginalization on housing policy negotiation processes. The aim of her analyses is to help identify the challenges and options for action associated with social transformation processes for the development and implementation of progressive housing policy innovations.
