Since September 2021, Johanna Günzel has been working as a research associate at the Chair of Urban Planning at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Since 2023, she is pursuing her PhD (Barbara Schönig). From November 2022 to January 2024, she was involved in the research workshop “Krise und Transformation des Eigenheims” at the Institute for European Urban Studies (IfEU).
Johanna Günzel studied Urban Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi from 2011 to 2016 (Bachelor’s) and completed her Master’s in Urban Studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 2017 to 2021.
Johanna Günzel has three children and has lived in Weimar since 2011. Originally, she is from Nuremberg.
Research focus
Johanna Günzel’s research focuses on questions of housing needs, the distribution of living space, and housing space sufficiency. She addressed these topics in the research workshop “Crisis and Transformation of the Single-Family Home” and is currently exploring them in her dissertation, focusing on the single-family home sector in shrinking cities in Thuringia.
Recent projects
- Dissertation: “Should I Stay or Should I Go? – Wohnbedürfnisse und -perspektiven von Empty Nestern im Einfamilienhaus”: The goal of this research is to conduct a qualitative investigation of the housing biographies, expectations and perspectives of single-family homeowners in post-family phases in areas of shrinking municipalities in Thuringia. The findings aim to provide recommendations for action that contribute to the planning of a target-group-oriented and sustainable housing supply in the examined municipalities and comparable cases.
