PhD project: Impact of smart home technologies on the well-being and quality of life with a focus on social isolation, family dynamics and interpersonal relationships

The research focus is the quality of life in the context of smart home technologies. Specifically, two areas will be examined: social isolation and loneliness, as well as social dynamics and family life. Firstly, the impact of smart home technologies on residents’ social isolation and loneliness will be explored, looking at both potential risks and opportunities for fostering social connections. Secondly, the way that smart home technologies influence the structure and dynamics of family life, interpersonal relationships, roles, responsibilities and everyday hierarchies will be examined. For the purposes of my research, I plan to use a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the social and individual effects of smart homes and to derive conclusions regarding the design of user-centered technologies that promote a good quality of life.
