Bernd Belina has been a Professor at the Institute for Human Geography Goethe Universität Frankfurt since October 2011, following his role as a Junior Professor at the same institute from 2008 to 2011. He was a Research Associate at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig (2007–2008) and the University of Potsdam’s Geography Department (2005–2007).
He earned his doctorate in Geography at the University of Bremen in 2004 with a dissertation titled “Space, Surveillance, Control: On State Regulation of Urban Populations,” after completing his studies in Geography there (1992–1999). He has also been a visiting scholar at CNRS PASSAGES in Bordeaux (2016) and the CITY Institute at York University in Toronto (2012).
Research focus
Bernd Belina’s research focuses on historical-geographical materialism, urban geography, rural geography, political geography, and critical criminology. His current research explores urban social movements in Athens, responses to far-right threats to democracy in Hesse, and theoretical perspectives on urban-rural relations, emphasizing electoral successes of right-wing parties.
