Lars Meier has been a Professor of Sociology with a Focus on Social Inequality at Goethe Universität Frankfurt since October 2019. Previously, he held a professorship in Diversity and Social Work at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK). He served as an interim professor at Goethe Universität and as a visiting professor at the Technische Universität Berlin, where he completed his habilitation, analyzing the significance of class in transformed spaces and neighborhoods.
Lars Meier earned his doctorate from TU Darmstadt in 2008 with a dissertation examining the privileges of German financial managers in London and Singapore, emphasizing the importance of place in everyday practices and identity performances. He has worked at institutions including the IAB (Institute for Employment Research), the University of Bremen, LMU Munich, and TU Berlin, and has been a visiting scholar at Oxford and Exeter Universities.
Research focus
His research focuses on a cultural sociology-inspired analysis of social inequalities through ethnographic methods. Lars Meier has conducted field research in cities such as London, Singapore, Bangalore, Nuremberg, and Glasgow. He has contributed to various research projects, including studies on the lifestyles of the new middle class in India, poverty research, and socio-spatial transformations. He is particularly interested in the transformation and social significance of public spaces.
