Sebastian Schipper has held the Heisenberg Professorship for Urban Geography at the Goethe Universität Frankfurt since May 2020. He serves as deputy spokesperson for the DFG Research Training Group “Gewohnter Wandel.”
After studying Geography, Sociology, and Economics at the University of Münster, he completed his doctorate at the Institute of Human Geography in Frankfurt on the ” Genealogie und Gegenwart der ‚unternehmerischen Stadt‘. Neoliberales Regieren in Frankfurt am Main” He has worked at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Freie Universität Berlin, and Tel Aviv University. His habilitation on ” Wohnen dem Markt entziehen? Städtische soziale Bewegungen in Tel Aviv-Jaffa und Frankfurt am Main” was completed in 2017.
Research focus
Sebastian Schipper’s research addresses critical applied geography, particularly on housing studies. His work explores the political economy of housing, gentrification processes, and urban social movements.
Recent projects
- Home and Housing in Urban Regeneration Processes (DFG), in collaboration with Bernd Belina & Tovi Fenster: This project examines the role of housing and homemaking in urban regeneration, analyzing these processes in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and Frankfurt am Main through a comparative historiographic approach.

This research critically examines housing policies and practices, focusing on socio-political impacts and strategies to address housing crises. - Processes of Gentrification in Frankfurt: This project investigates the dynamics and effects of gentrification in Frankfurt, focusing on socio-economic transformations and their implications for urban residents and neighborhoods.
