Thorsten Beckers has been leading the Chair of Infrastructure Economics and Management at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar since October 2019. From 2007 to 2019, he worked at the TU Berlin as a lecturer in Infrastructure Management and Transport Policy (2015–2019), junior professor for Infrastructure Economics (2009–2014), and held the position of a guest professor.
He completed his Ph.D. in 2005 with summa cum laude at TU Berlin on public-private partnership (PPP) projects in federal road construction. He studied Industrial Engineering and spent an exchange year at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
Research focus
Thorsten Beckers’ research analyzes institutional arrangements and their impacts, particularly in infrastructure sectors such as transportation, energy, waste, and water management. His key topics include the planning, pricing, financing, and regulation of monopolistic infrastructures within a multi-level government system, as well as the institutional design of infrastructure sectors and other public services.
He also explores the intersection of infrastructure, real estate, and urban planning. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration with legal, engineering, and planning researchers to address practical economic and infrastructure policy questions.
Recent projects
- “Development of Sustainable Municipal Energy and Heating Concepts, Considering Compatibility with the Overall Sector Coupling Strategy – The Fontanestadt Neuruppin as a Pioneer” (EW-K2): This project focuses on developing innovative and sustainable energy and heating concepts for municipal use, with a particular focus on their integration into broader sector coupling strategies. The town of Neuruppin serves as a model for testing these concepts.
- “High-Performance Charging for Long-Distance Trucks” (HoLa): The HoLa project investigates solutions for the high-performance charging of long-distance freight trucks, addressing the growing need for sustainable and efficient charging infrastructure in the logistics sector.
