Based on Danish social housing estates of the post-war period, Anne Tietjen addresses the integration of the welfare state in historical open space designs of the housing estates. These ‘welfare landscapes’ reflect the zeitgeist of their respective period of construction and planning paradigm. Which housing ideologies can be seen in their material existence nowadays? And to what extent do these structures reflect urban residential change? Using various case studies, it presents the critical approach of residential ideologies in order to counter dominant narratives and stigma around home ownership and tenancy and to create space for contemporary practices of co-living in practical and theoretical discourse.

Anne Tietjen is Professor in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Transformation at the University of Copenhagen. Since 2022 she is Head of Studies for the MSc Landscape Architecture. Anne’s work bridges theory and practice at the intersection of landscape architecture, urban design, and planning. She works with the transformation of existing built environments and landscapes, focusing on the politics and agency of design for sustainable urban and rural development and quality of life for more than humans.
